How Many Umbrella Bags Does a Hotel Actually Need?
It’s the first question almost every buyer asks: how many umbrella bags should I actually order? Order too few and you’re out of stock on the first big storm; order too many and you’re sitting on cases for years. The good news is that a usable estimate takes about two minutes of math.
The three numbers that drive it are your daily foot traffic, the share of that traffic carrying an umbrella on a wet day, and how many rainy days you want to cover before reordering.
A simple formula
Start with daily visitors through the entrances you want to cover. Assume that on a rainy day, roughly 40–70% of people arrive with an umbrella (higher in dense, walk-up cities; lower where most guests arrive by car). Multiply that by the number of rainy days you want one order to last.
| Property size | Daily rainy-day entries | Bags/rainy day (est.) | Order to cover ~30 rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boutique hotel | 150 | ~75 | ~2,500 |
| Mid-size hotel | 400 | ~220 | ~6,500 |
| Large hotel / resort | 1,000 | ~550 | ~16,500 |
| Convention hotel | 2,500 | ~1,400 | ~42,000 |
These are starting points, not gospel. A coastal resort with a long rainy season should size up; a property where guests arrive by valet and car can size down.
Don’t forget the spares
Add a buffer of 15–20% for surprise storms, multiple entrances, and the simple fact that people grab a second bag for a dripping umbrella when leaving. It’s cheaper to carry a small surplus than to run dry during a downpour.
Long, short, or both?
Most hotels stock mainly long bags for full-size umbrellas, plus a smaller share of short bags for guests with folding travel umbrellas. A 80/20 long-to-short split is a reasonable default; adjust toward short bags if you host a lot of business travelers.
