Biodegradable vs. Plastic Umbrella Bags

If your property has a sustainability commitment, the umbrella bag at your door is a small but visible test of it. Here’s how compostable bioplastic bags compare to standard plastic — and how to talk about them honestly.

What the materials actually are

Standard bags are low-density polyethylene (LDPE), a conventional plastic that’s cheap, clear, and durable but not biodegradable. Compostable bags are made from a corn-starch and PBAT bioplastic that breaks down under commercial composting conditions and can meet standards like ASTM D6400 or EN 13432.

“Biodegradable” vs. “compostable”

These words aren’t interchangeable, and regulators are increasingly strict about green claims. “Compostable” means the material breaks down into non-toxic components under defined composting conditions and timelines; “biodegradable” is a looser term. The claim you print should match the certification your film actually meets and the way the bag will realistically be disposed of. We confirm the standard for each run and help you word any on-bag or signage language accurately.

Is the upcharge worth it?

Compostable film costs a bit more per bag, but it’s still a few cents — an inexpensive way to make a sustainability commitment visible at the exact moment a guest forms an impression of your property. For hotels, universities, and corporate campuses marketing their environmental programs, that daily, tactile proof point often pays for itself in goodwill.
